Lunch With Books: “Medical Women of Wheeling” by Margaret Brennan

Wheeling 250 and Women’s History Month:
In celebration of Wheeling 250 and Women’s History Month, Margaret Brennan will discuss Three accomplished medical women of Wheeling’s history who set the standard for all who followed.
Dr. Eliza Hughes (1817-1882) studied in Philadelphia and in 1860 became the first woman graduate of any medical school in the soon-to-be state of West Virginia.
Known as “Mother” Holliday, Lydia Wilson Holliday (1802-1899) served as a volunteer nurse during the Civil War at the Sprigg House Hospital, the Anthenaeum, and at the Battle of Winchester.
Dr. Harriet Jones (1856-1943), pictured above, was the first woman physician certified in West Virginia. she opened a Women’s hospital in Wheeling, was active in eradicating tuberculosis, and became a force in the temperance and suffrage movements.
