Juneteenth Celebration of Emancipation, June 19, 6:00 pm

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.

Join us at 6:00 at the north end of market plaza at 10th street – location of the slave auction block – for wheeling’s first observance of juneteenth. a ceremony will be conducted after which a celebration with food and music will be held at the south end of market plaza (11th street).
